Root Canals in Denver

Root canals are not a common procedure in the dental office.  Most patients have never had the "opportunity" to undergo this dental procedure. Denver dentist Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp want to dispel some common misconceptions about "routine" root canals.

Are root canal painful

A vast majority of root canals are not painful.  As a guess... less than 5% are uncomfortable to have done.  Now when you are in the 5% to  you it might as well been 100%. Common local anesthesia work an a vast majority of cases but as you can imagine it does not work on "all" cases..

Early diagnosis and treatment means less sensitivity

As a "general rule" if you diagnose and treat a tooth that needs a root canal early the less likelihood the tooth will be sensitive during or after the procedure.  If our patients wait till the area becomes swollen and very painful it may be difficult to get the tooth completely numb for the procedure.

Symptoms of a tooth needing a root canal

There are many symptoms that diagnose that a tooth needs a root canal. On occasion the absence of any sensitivity shows that the nerve is dying in the tooth.  Many (but not most) have the following symptoms:
  • Dull throbbing tooth ache
  • Swollen area of the face or gum
  • Tapping on the tooth hurts
  • Pain that hurts for hours at a time
  • Pain that wake you up at night
  • Pain not alleviated by over the counter medications
  • Cold or hot items on the tooth make the pain intense
  • On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being very bad it is an 8-10 range.
Can the diagnosis of a root canal be tricky

Absolutely! Our Denver dentist and endodontists they refer to have cases that can be puzzling and difficult to diagnose.  Symptoms can be intermittent and difficult to locate.

How successful are root canals?

Our Denver dentist review of literature and recognized informed consent shows that root canals are successful 90-95% of the time.  That also mean that 5-10% do not work and the tooth needs to be extracted.  Root canal are reliable but not infallible dental procedure.
